Let’s decode everything about the hair transplant procedure:

What is a hair transplant?

Hair transplant is a surgical process conducted by a dermatological or plastic surgeon that includes the expulsion of hair follicles from any healthy or fuller site in the body like face or legs and planting them on the bare segment. The most recent procedures are lasting and pick up follicular clusters of hair. This procedure is called Follicular Hair Transplantation (FUT) which is possible in two ways: strip harvesting and follicular unit extraction (FUE).

Preparation for the hair transplant

  • ECG or blood tests may be asked if you are over a certain age.
  • Your surgeon will hand over a list of medications that you need to stop.
  • Two weeks before the surgery, you’ll be asked to avoid the following medicines :
  • Aspirin
  • Antidepressants
  • Blood-thinning drugs
  • Anti-inflammatory meds
  • Beta-blockers
  • Multivitamins
  • Mineral supplements
  • Herbal Supplements
  • To ensure your body and scalp are in optimal condition, smoking and alcohol consumption have to be discontinued for a certain period of time.
  • Don’t get a haircut before the surgery because the donor site needs to be as long as possible making it easier for the surgeon to finish the procedure. Furthermore, longer hair is beneficial to cover up stitches and scars
  • Massage your scalp for 20-30 mins per day. This will soften the skin and improve the skin tone along with establishing and improving blood flow whilst promoting flexibility of the skin on the scalp.

Hair transplant procedure

  • The hair in the donor area is trimmed before the surgery begins.
  • Local anesthesia is given after the hair in the donor area is trimmed
  • From the back of the head hair follicles are removed and relocated to the balding areas
  • The tissue in the donor area that contains bald resistant hair follicles is eliminated precisely and the donor area is stitched.
  • The stitches in the contributor region are stowed away from the patient’s hair that is combed over them. These stitches are eliminated right around ten days after the surgery
  • Microscopes are then utilized by careful experts to view the donor tissue for analyzing and preparing follicular unit hair grafts.
  • After the local anesthesia is given to the patient, the balding recipient area is prepared for the surgical process. No trimming/expulsion of hair is needed at the top of the recipient area.
  • Follicular Unit Grafts are set in the minuscule entry points that are made in an irregular pattern in the recipient area.
  • The smallest grafts are set before the hairline and the denser grafts are set behind.
  • After the surgery, small cuts with short hair would be visible on the patient’s operated region.
  • The cut imprints heal naturally and the redness in the recipient region vanishes within seven days.

Recovery procedure

  • After the surgery, the bandage from the donor region is removed within 1-2 days
  • If you have any stitches, they’ll be removed within 10 days
  • Patients can shampoo 2-3 days after the surgery
  • The scalp needs to be protected from sun and infections for a while after the surgery
  • Medication will be prescribed as the scalp may seem to be tender or swollen after the surgery.
  • Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication will be prescribed to avoid infection and ease swelling
  • To strengthen your new hair follicles maintain a healthy diet
